Forgive this shameless commercial break but...
The music, the poetry, the other writing...they are not hobbies. They are what I do for a living. I choose to be an independent musician and publisher because I believe it is the way of the future. That said, the one remaining benefit of having a major record label or publisher behind you is the ability to shift enough copies of any given item to make it worthwhile advertising that item. This I cannot afford to do. So it's a word of mouth, little by little approach to building a fan base and sales.
The shipping costs charged by sites like amazon.com also deter people outside the USA from buying my CDs and books. This is why I recently added a shopping cart to my own site, davetutin.com, where everything can now be purchased direct from me (using any major credit card or PayPal). I would rather subsidize the shipping for buyers than have amazon take 55% of the purchase price simply for listing the items! (Yes, it's a little known fact but that is exactly what amazon keeps from the sale of all independently produced music or books.)
So, shipping within the USA from davetutin.com is just $1.50 per item. And shipping anywhere else in the world is just $2.50 per item. In addition, I have kept prices as low as possible allowing for a very reasonable profit on what the items cost to produce (Note: the folks out there who think music should be free should check out the cost of instruments and recording software and hardware. They'd quickly understand why we cannot give it away!)
So, here's a list of the items you can get from davetutin.com:
RAISED IN VAIN. A two-CD set, featuring 18 original songs and one cover version - a song by Jackson C. Frank, one of my heros from the 60s who only got to make one album. Nicely packaged (remember packaging?) with lyric booklet etc, and cover art by the world-famous British artist Mackenzie Thorpe. Just $10 plus shipping. That's 60 cents a song for US buyers. Cheaper than the average download.
DEEP SALVAGE. A four-track CD that is a collaboration between myself and my good friend in San Francisco, Jeff Shattuck. Jeff 'salvaged' some lyrics for which I'd never written music - hence the title - and wrote some really cool melodies and produced some really powerful tracks around them. My words in a totally different setting. $4 plus shipping.
OR WORDS TO THAT EFFECT. The collection of poems that won a gold medal in the 2009 Independent Publisher Book Awards. A signed, limited edition of 200 copies. A few still left at $10 plus shipping.
DAVE TUTIN SONGS: VOLUME ONE. For those who want to play along with the 18 original songs on RAISED IN VAIN, this book contains the sheet music for them all. But in addition it contains all the posts I wrote for this blog giving background information on where the songs came from, what inspired me to write them. Also a signed limited edition of 200. $10 plus shipping.
THE MOMENTARY TRUCE. My most recent book, another collection of poems, and not one for the easily offended. Some of the poems deal (some would say graphically) with sexual situations. This is a hard cover book hence the price: $20 plus shipping. (Signed on request.)
And finally, THE CULTURE OF NOW. Hard to describe, this is my first non-fiction work. Having spent something like 35 years in the advertising business I am fascinated by the changes our culture is undergoing. Having been there at the birth of Internet marketing and dealt with major players in the cell phone revolution I have become increasingly concerned that technology no longer simply helps us do things more easily, it is actually changing what it means to be human. This is what this book examines, from the perspectives of education, politics, advertising, music, movies and more. $10 plus shipping.
To the many of you who already have some or all of my music and writings, thanks. Please pass on a link to either davetutin.com or this blog, davetutin.typepad.com to your friends. It will be much appreciated.
I now return you to my regularly scheduled blog posts!
